University hospitals. The first report to the superintendent, covering
from March 22, 1909 to July 31, 1912, shows that during the period covered by the
report 1864 cases were admitted to the hospital. Of this number 1665 were
discharged and 123 died, 76 remaining- in the hospital on the date of July
31st, 1912. The average number of patients for the last year of the period was
82.25. 718 clinics have been held and 75 necropsies performed. The average cost
per patient per diem for the same period was $2.16. The number of patients
treated in the University Free Dispensary, the outpatient department of the
hospital for the year ending July 3ist, 1912, was 9229. The total number of visits were 33. 190, giving a
daily average attendance of 109 in this department. The cost per
patient's visit was $170. 13,313 prescriptions were issued during the year. The
report shows that from October, 1911, to July, 1912, inclusive 4948 laboratory
examinations were made in connection with the work of the hospital. Practically
every county in the state has been represented in the patients in the hospital,
567 cases were medical; 942 surgical; 187 obstetrical; 159 births and 9
infants. Of the medical cases that were admitted, 82 were discharged recovered;
350 improved; 77 not improved and 58 died. Of the surgical cases 408 were
discharged recovered; 382 improved; 103 not improved and 49 died. The Elliot
hospital building is supplemented by the use of a brick flat, 417-419 Delaware
Street, as a nurses' home: a frame building, 324 Union street, also used as a
nurses' home; a frame building at 413 Delaware street as a domestics' home; a
frame building at 304 State street, as superintendent's residence and a frame
building at 303 Washington avenue held in reserve for contagious cases
developing at the Elliot Memorial building. |
