Professional Experience

What path has your career taken since your residency?  Include military service, private practice, academic career, teaching and research accomplishments.

 

I worked as an assistant professor in neurology at the Univ or MN for 6 months, then took a job in Fargo with the MeritCare Health System. Here I am head of neuroscience and head of neurology at the Univ or ND Medical school.  I teach and lecture frequently, I am active in clinical research – prinicipal investigator in several stroke trials.  I lead the stroke program, dementia program and Parkinson’s clinic.  I also have a very busy practice.

 

Residency Recollections

We are interested in anecdotes and experiences from your residency years.  Include interactions among fellow residents and teaching staff. 

 

I remember the people and their personalities.

 

Looking back, would you do it again?  What would you change? 

 

I am pleased with my educational experience at the University of MN.  I like Minneapolis and the school.  I have benefited from the “hands-on” type residency where I was very busy and had significant autonomy.

 

Additional Thoughts

Share your thoughts regarding the changes in medicine since your residency.  In your opinion, is Neurology positioned well for the future? 

 

In my estimation, neurology is so interesting and such an exciting field that it will always be a great specialty.  I think that we need to be thought leaders and teachers in the field so that others are consistently aware of our value to medicine.
